Give Thanks...

Well, it is almost time for one of my favorite holidays…Thanksgiving!! It has been my favorite holiday for many years, not so much because of the wonderful food that I get to eat, but because I get the chance to sit with my extended family, reminisce on the “good ol’ days,” and catch up on current endeavors. I usually have my plans set every year and my body is so ready to begin the rest and relaxation it deserves. I can’t wait to get some of my aunt’s cornbread stuffing, coconut cake, and banana-less pudding (I know it’s weird, but I don’t eat bananas).

Also, as I reflect on this holiday season, I find that I am thankful for so many things that people take for granted on a daily basis. I am thankful for my health, because without it I wouldn’t be able to make difference in this world; my family, because without them, I would struggle through the tough periods of life; and I am thankful for my god-given gifts, because without them I would not be able to do what I love.

As this Thanksgiving break approaches, what are some of the traditions that you have in your family? What are some of the foods you look forward to eating? What are three (3) things at the top your personal list that you are thankful for?

Some traditions that take place in my family is that everyone cooks at their own home that Wednesday before thanksgiving then, we all come together at my grandparents home and cook as one big family and it is pretty early around 11am we all meet to cook. We all pitch in, make store runs, and keep the younger ones entertained of course. While also reminiscing on past good, bad, and funny events almost as a way to show how we have grown from such. While we usually finish up around 5-7pm and all the females come together to go shop all the lovey black Friday sales, while we leave the kids with the men to play and watch football. Some of the foods that I am thankful for are the macaroni and cheese, collard greens, and of course all the different cakes and pies. Yet three of the top things I am thankful for is me and my families health, love/support for one another and our education that we have received in some sort of way. The traditions and ways that we were brought up are the reason we are who we are today. And I am truly grateful for my family.

Since my mom and dad are divorced, I usually have Thanksgiving at the Aunt Nikki’s house. Every time Thanksgiving comes around, my grandmother and grandfather on my mom’s side comes over to be with my mom and they do whatever they do, I’m not really sure what that consists of. Sometimes my grandfather is not able to come because his mom, my great grandmother has Alzheimer’s, so he has to go to her house to take care of her if no one else can, but typically he brings her too. Sometimes I think he just goes to her house because she doesn’t like my grandmother, her daughter-in-law and my grandmother isn’t too fond of her either, so the presence of my great grandmother stresses my grandmother out. Before we go to my aunt’s house my grandmother always stresses the fact that she “wants a plate and a piece of my grandma Coco’s lemon cake.” When we go to my aunt’s house we typically dance, cheer, sing, play or have some kind of competition while we wait for the food to be prepared. Last Thanksgiving, I think we had a push up competition between my brother and I, I won. We typically eventually end up either watch the movie, Dream Girls or listen to the soundtrack. We all know basically all the words, including the adults because it’s our family’s movie. After we eat, my dad takes us back home and my grandmother get her plate and my siblings and I complain about being hunger although we just ate and my mom says, “oh well,” and we go on about of business. I look forward to eating the bread, candy yams, and fried chicken. I don’t really like baked chicken. I am thankful for my family, the opportunity to be in college, and the opportunity to have been invited to be on World’s winning cheerleading team this year.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. I love thanksgiving because it just makes me happy knowing I get to go back home to see my family and eat good food. I never knew how much thanksgiving actually meant to me until I got to college. Stuck with the cafeteria food and chick-fil-a, I can not wait to taste real food and enjoy my break from school. My family doesn’t have a tradition but my grandmother does make meatballs and mash potatoes just for me during thanksgiving. I love how the house always seems a little more cozier and warmer during thanksgiving. It feels even more at home during thanksgiving because everyone is hungry, happy to see each other and just ready to sit down and watch tv together and talk about memories. Thanksgiving is just the best holiday. I think it’s so fun going grocery shopping because the grocery stores are always filled with people taking all the whip cream and eggnog. Having to go to store to store just to get a fat enough turkey. I can not wait to see my family and my best friend, I love them so much. I just want to forget about all my homework and just be stress free for just one day. I am thankful for having a warm home to go to and a family who loves me, and last but certainly not least, food.

My family traditions during this time of the year are going Christmas tree shopping few days before Thanksgiving, so it will be up by Thanksgiving Day. The night before Thanksgiving my sisters and I do the desserts such as flan, cheesecake, or fruit salad. Also on the day, we cook the rest of the food for that day and by dinner, we all gather at the table laughing and reminiscing about all the things that have happened throughout the year. We discuss our accomplishments during the year as well. We do not have much family to go to someone house, so we celebrate Thanksgiving at our home every year that I can remember. Being Hispanic our menus for Thanksgiving changes every year, so I am looking forward to hopefully eating my mom special turkey that she makes during this time of year, flan, and baked pasta. The three things that are at the top of my personal list that I am thankful for is the health of my family and me because without them I would not be able to get through my struggles that I have faced in my life. Also without a good health, I would not be able to experience the things I have experienced this year; the opportunity to go college and make my parents proud; and I am thankful for my best friends for being part of my support system.

Thanksgiving is a day I feel that you emphasize what you are thankful for to show appreciation for everything. This year I will be more happy to go home to see family and friends. Traditionally on thanksgiving we would usually have a big thanksgiving meal with cousins aunties and uncles and all, but this year since it is my first year away from home for a significant amount of time Thanksgiving is going to be shared with my immediate family. Favorite part of Thanksgiving is of course the food but also just watching the NFL games that take place that day. My family started building more holiday traditions within the past 5 years though because before it was hard to always meet up or connect with family when you literally lived across the country. As I gotten older I don't know if I call this an accidental tradition but going black Friday shopping would always happen. Some of things I'm thankful for is just seeing family, health of my family. Also I'm thankful to see another year as my no.1 thing

As I was reading this blog, I thought about the things that my family do for Thanksgiving and I realized that we don’t have many but to me they’re meaningful. Of course in preparation for Thanksgiving me and my immediate family sit down and plan the menu, me and my older sister argue with my dad about the food because we don’t like turkey because after Thanksgiving we eat it for a good week before he throws it out and to be quite honest after turkey is refrigerated it doesn’t taste the same. So after arguing for a good 30 minutes about turkey we finish the menu and get ready to go shopping. Remember how i said that me and my sister don’t like turkey? Yeah my dad buys it anyway and at that point I become fed up with shopping because I don’t like being in grocery stores for more than an hour for some reason. So we leave go home and me and my dad play Call of Duty while my mom and sister prep the food, after this me and my dad go in the kitchen and prep the turkey, I always inject the turkey because when it comes to Thanksgiving dinner I don’t have a big job in preparing the food because I was so young...skipping to the end we have dinner the next day and go down my nana’s house to be with the rest of my family. But this Thanksgiving I’m not looking forward to none of that because my cousin is having his first child at the end of the month so that’s what I’m really looking forward to this holiday because I can’t wait to welcome a new member into my family. During this holiday season I’m thankful for my family, my friends, and the friends I dropped along the way because they all taught me a lot and that is to never let anyone stop you from growing because your real team will never let you quit they will push you to do more and go farther.

Every thanksgiving me and my family either go to my aunt, grandma or cousin houses or everybody comes to our house. We usually don’t find out till like two days before shaking my head! I am a really picky eater so I don’t like half the stuff people say is good. I’m looking forward for some honey glazed HAM I love ham! I want some macaroni, rice and gravy, turkey, sweet potato pie, green beans and the list goes on. The first thing I’m thankful for is God! He sent his only son to die on the cross for our sins. And he gives us daily forgiveness, and loves us unconditionally. Secondly I’m thankful for my family that’s always here for me whenever I need something they got it! I can always count on them to be there for me loving me unconditionally and pushing me to do better in life. Not just my mediate family but all my family. I do what I do to make them and myself happy. When I win we all win! Lastly I’m thankful for my mentors through life. Throughout my life I’ve had the chance to come across 2 amazing people that helped me get to where I am today. Their names are Jacqueline Robinson and Whitney Hill. Mrs. Robinson was my chorus teacher all four years in high school. She taught me so many things that I will take with me forever. She was always there to listen rather she was busy or not she was always a phone call away. I will always be grateful for her! Ms. Hill! She was/ is like a big sister to me. Whenever I needed advice I would go straight to her she always knew what to say. She kept me out of a lot of trouble. I look up to her, I hope to soon be like her one day.

Every thanksgiving my family will cook at the house just, so we could have our own food then by the time we get done cooking and eating at the house we would go to other family members house to celebrate with them as well. But things could change this year, we don’t know yet. I'm looking forward to the HAM with pineapples!! And of course, the macaroni and cheese!!!! Those are two foods that I'm really looking forward to eating. If there is Hawaiian bread than I will eat that too because it goes with just about anything. The other foods such as turkey, stuffing, yams and other things like that I'm not really a fan but I will still eat it. The first thing I am thankful for is God because he let my family see another year and hopefully many more years to come. Secondly, I am thankful for my family who is always there when I need them and how loving and caring they are. They have yet to let me down and I really do appreciate them for that. Especially my parents, they will never let me down and they will always make sure I’m straight. Finally, I am thankful for my friends who is always there each day. Through the ups and downs they are still there and I know I can count on them to always be here when I need them. Hopefully as the years go on and on my list, will get longer with more things that I am thankful for.

When it comes to thanksgiving my family does not have traditions really. Every year a different family hosts the thanksgiving dinner, and it’s nice to travel to different places. A lot of my family lives all over so it is nice to not only travel, but to also visit family I do not get to see often. My cousins in particular I am always excited to see, because we are a lot closer in age. So it is good to see them because we get to catch up and talk about what’s going on in our lives.
I don’t know if this happens in every family but towards the end there is always is a big argument. Normally it is about current events that are happening and people disagreeing. Though this does not sound fun, it really is. I like to give my college student “two cents” about the subject.
Some food that I am really looking forward to eating is definitely, sweet potato casserole, sweet potato pie, and Mac and cheese. These three foods I do not get to eat that often so it is good to have it on this special occasion. It feels really good to eat good food with great family, and just really spend time together. Family, life, and love I am truly grateful for. The fact that I have all three of these things in my life makes me feel whole. There is nothing else I personally need than what I have right now. Though materialistic things are nice, things like love and family are things that you cannot buy.

First of all let me start off by saying i am so glad that this is a blog , simply because i love my family thanksgiving traditions. So every year for thanksgiving my family from New york comes down to visit, some go to Charlotte, NC while others go to Buford, GA. its’ funny because me, my mom and my brother use to be apart of the family that came down to visit and we would take turns on who we would spend thanksgiving with. One year we would go visit my great-grandparents in Georgia and the next year we would go visit my grandmother and uncles in Charlotte. But basically one of our traditions is making our way down south to be with the family ( the roots of the family). Another one of our family traditions is that on thanksgiving day the women cook while the kids put up the christmas tree and the men do whatever they’re never really much help. Our last family tradition is when it is time to eat the TV’s and the phones go off and before we can eat everyone at the table has to say what they’re thankful for and then my grandmother says grace.
Our traditional family thanksgiving menu consists of a fried turkey, ham, collard greens, yams mac & cheese, cornbread, stuffing, mashed potatoes, corn on the cob, potato salad, rice & beans, cheesecake, pineapple upside down cake, sweet potato pie, banana pudding and apple pie with the vanilla ice cream on top. After we get done eating i usually take a nap, then i get up and eat some more.
The top three things that i am personally thankful for is my family number one because they always support me and have my back. Secondly i am thankful to be enrolled as a full-time student at WSSU because everyone doesn’t get the opportunity to go to college. Lastly i am thankful for my momma because she always holds it down with or without my father, my momma always did her part and for that i’ll be forever thankful.

I always found it funny that the fall season is my least favorite but houses my favorite holidays, Halloween and Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving comes second to Halloween though, I just love scaring people I guess. But when it comes to Thanksgiving nothing will ever trump the food and sleep that comes with this holiday. Before I wanted to learn to program I thought I wanted to be a chief because I enjoyed cooking very much. I had taken culinary arts at the career center my junior year of high school and loved my chief and the class very much, but I learned there that I really just enjoyed cooking for fun and not for business. Every year I help in the kitchen with everything I can do or need to do. I help with the turkey, sweet potato pie, pumpkin pie, yams, macaroni, green beans, collard greens, backed beans, Cornish hens, deviled eggs and my personal favorite the stuffing, I eat it straight out the bag to myself. We don’t really for say have traditions but more like timely conveniences such as my aunt’s birthday around the same time, so I make her own special pumpkin pie because it is her favorite item of Thanksgiving. I would say I’m thankful for the rotary club and my elementary school because if it were not for them I would not have my scholarship here. Another thing I’m thankful for is my hair because my hair is my crown like a lion’s mane is theirs. The top thing I’m thankful for is my mother for always making sure I stay on task.

As Thanksgiving approaches, I also get very excited. The excitement comes because I get to see my extended family but most importantly, my uncles. I look forward to eating my favorite dish, corn pudding, my grandmother's dressing and my step dad’s mac-n-cheese. We have so many traditions that I’m not even sure where to start. The first tradition that I look forward to is staying up all night on Wednesday night with my mother, grandmother, and sisters to cook all the food. I love when we challenge each other and figure out who’s dish tastes the best. Being that I come from a musical family, my favorite tradition is on Thanksgiving Day when dinner is over, we sit in the family room with my uncle and his keyboard and sing old songs, new songs, and even make up our own. I am so excited to go Black Friday shopping with my mom, aunts and sisters. I am thankful for many things in my life! If I had to chose three main things, it would be my growth in self-confidence as a woman, a supporting and praying, and my relationship with my mother. As a freshman, being in a new place/environment on your own is very challenging and stressful. Having someone there when you need to vent, cry, or just a motivation is very necessary. For me, that person is my mother. Even though I’m in college and growing as a woman, the extra love and push from her is very much needed. I’m thankful for my growth in self-confidence as a woman because I remember multiple times that I didn’t have confidence in myself at all. I’m very thankful and grateful to have a supportive and praying family behind me! Whenever I need something or just a little prayer to keep me going, I know that my family will always have my back! This Thanksgiving in particular means a lot to me!

Over the past years things have changed. For thanksgiving usually a bunch of my family gets together and eat, drink, talk but in the past years they go from eating to shopping. Thanksgiving use to be one of my favorite holidays becuase most of my family would get together and have a good time. After the blackfriday deals started happening on thursday it is not the same and a lot of family members leave. Although it is not the same I am looking forward to eating a little bit of everything especially some of my aunts home made hot wings. I am thanful for a lot of things but my top three is first off being alive. The reason I say this is because we never know when it might be our time and some people aren't very appreciative of there lives. I am also very thankful to have both of my parents alive. the reason I say this is because some my friends lost there parents and I know it wasnt easy on them and seeing what they went through made me realize how lucky I was to have both of mine. The last main thing im thankful for is that I have all kinds of support in me attending college. I say this becuase I have some family members that were not able to go to college whether it was family related or even money related. I do think people take some of these things for granted but they do not know that everyone can't have those things and thats why I am very thankful.

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays because of the good family vibes and great food. I don't really have any heavily set family traditions for thanksgiving, every year thanksgiving goes a little differently. We don’t have a lot of family near us. When my dad lived here we would have a big thanksgiving breakfast with him and then have thanksgiving dinner with my mom. Also every couple years for either thanksgiving or christmas we take a trip to Chicago because that’s where my mom and dad and most of my family is from. All of our family that’s not still there comes and meets up at my great grandma's house and cook, eat and stay for a while. That’s always a fun time when we get to see everybody. The foods that I am looking forward to eating is ham, macaroni(which is my favorite food), my granny make great sweet potato pie, and collard greens. The top 3 things that I am thankful for are my family, they helped shape who I am today and I don’t know what I’d do without my brothers and I love my  mom and dad for always trying to give us the best life possible. I am thankful for all the great experiences and opportunities I have been given. I have done a lot of cool things and been a lot of places and I plan to do much more. Lastly I will be thankful for all the food that I can’t wait to eat!

My family every year like many others pick one persons house and meeet there. It used to be my grandmothers house before she past now its my cousin Tinas. The main things like turkey and stuffing are made there and other family members are suppose to bring their special dish and deserts. We all put on a movie and eat together laugh, talk, drink, smoke and whatever else people want to do and have a good time. I look forward to eating my cousins baked Mac and cheese some stuffing and honey ham greens yams sweet potato pie and chocolate cake. I just can not wait to go to every body house and eat thats my gial this thanksgiving to get fat before we come back from break. I am thankful for a lot of things but my top three is being able to make it to college, i am thankful for becoming a humble young man and most of all gaining a family and support system to help me keep moving forward so I really appreciate all my new friends professors and or adults that i have encountered this semester. I am honestly just thankful for the blessings i have received and the blessings to come. The closest blessing that is coming is that plate im bout to kill. So i would like to say early i am thankful for the food im about to recieve because i am telling y’all i am bout to go crazy as soon as i hear the food is ready in the name of Jesus AMEN! LETS EAT!!!!

My family usually does it big on Christmas and just have the people who live in the house plus my brother and his two children come Thanksgiving. My mom usually starts cooking the night before and me and my sister make deviled eggs. After we do that we usually all sit down to play board games, watch movies, and bake cupcakes or brownies with the kids. Thanksgiving Day we all eat and the girls bring all the Christmas things down from the attic. It has been our tradition since we moved to North Carolina that we put up Christmas stuff after we eat and continue for the next couple days. Friday, we don’t usual got black Friday shopping but we do all make our Christmas list and leave them on the fridge for everyone to see. Some food I am looking forward to eating is the honey ham with gravy, my mom’s yams that she puts marshmallows on, and her green bean casserole. One thing I am thankful for is god allowing me to wake up every day. I am thankful for this because not everyone gets that opportunity. Another thing I am thankful for is both of my parents and my step-father because without them I would not be where I am today. They have always been there for me and supported me through everything. One of the last things I am thankful for is my education. I am thankful for this because education is very important and to be able to get that is a great opportunity.

As thanksgiving is approaching I am ready to see family that I have not seen in forever. Every thanksgiving my family goes to my grandma house too eat and watch the football game. All the ladies sit in the kitchen and talk (as all women do), the men go in the Livingroom and watch the football game, and as everyone knows the kids are just playing and having a good time until it is time to eat. But before everyone gets to my grandma my mom and I go to her house and help her cook and get the house ready for everyone. She makes my momma and I clean the dish as she is cooking, makes us mop the floor, clean the bathroom, and make sure that all the food is set the right way. Probably just like everyone else grandma you not supposed to be in the kitchen unless she needs you for something, and my grandma is just like that you do not go in that kitchen or she will lay you out right there. But out of all the foods she cooks for thanksgiving I am looking forward to eating yams, some smoked turkey, and my favorite sweet potato pie the best dessert in the world, only because my grandma makes it. The three things that I am most thankful for is going to college, not getting hurt in my first car accident, and for my family who loves me no matter what I do even if it is the dumbest thing in the world.

I’m always really excited when Thanksgiving comes around because I’m in love with food and when all my favorite foods and desserts come together, it’s the best thing ever. My family doesn’t really have any special traditions. When we all come together, we catch up on things with each other and start goofing around. A lot of things have changed with my family, they’re not like they use to be but some of us still manage to have a good time with one another. Thanksgiving is 3 days for me. The first day is the big dinner with my father’s side of the family, the second day we go to my grandmother’s house(my mother’s mother), and the third day my father’s side eat again because we always have so much food left over from the first day. There are a lot of foods that I am looking forward to eating. Ham(I do not like Turkey), chicken, macaroni and cheese, stuffing, greens, deviled eggs, banana pudding, honeybun cake, red velvet, etc. I’m just so excited for all of this and it won’t come fast enough. I’m really ready to go home because I miss my family. 3 things I’m really thankful for is having God in my life, my family, the ones that are real and supportive of me, and my true friends, that are always there for me and I love being around. I love them with everything in me and thankful to have those people in my life.

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. This is a time to be around family, laugh, talk, and enjoy each others company. One of the traditions in my family on thanksgiving is that my grandmother makes a different type of cake every year. She has made honey bun cake, chocolate chip cake, red velvet, and even lemon cake, and they are all really good. We also go to my great grandmother’s house at some point on Thanksgiving day to see how she is doing. Football is also a tradition on Thanksgiving day for all the men in the family, which is the case for many families honestly. Black Friday shopping is the last thing we do every year as a family to do some early Christmas shopping. I have a personal tradition on Thanksgiving also. My dad and mom split up when I was young so I spend time with my mom and her side of the family and then I go to my dad’s house to see him and my stepmom and spend time with them. I look forward to eating some of my grandmother’s delicious cake, honey baked ham, and macaroni cheese. I also cannot wait to eat those yeast rolls that my stepmom makes every year. I have a lot to be thankful for but if I had to narrow it down to three I would say that I am blessed to have a family who loves me and would try their best to do anything for me. I am also blessed to have a home to go to at all much less Thanksgiving. Being here at WSSU is a blessing, because not everyone gets the opportunity to go to college so while I’m here I am going to take full advantage of it.

I love thanksgiving because it seems like all the negative goes away for one day. We do not really have traditions, recently we started having fried turkey and baked turkey for people preferences. One year, we had thanksgiving at my mom’s house and the next year, we had thanksgiving at my dad’s house with mostly my stepmom’s family. My mom had a small thanksgiving dinner with her boyfriend that year. This year, my dad, stepmom, and I might go to my aunt’s house in Maryland depending on how the weather. If not, then my dad and stepmom will cook and some of her family members will bring desserts and sides. Since my dad moved out (they have not been together in a long time, but he was living with us), I usually do not have thanksgiving with my mom. I would just come back from dad house and eat what she made for dinner a couple days. I look forward to eating fried turkey, mac and cheese, and banana pudding. I am thankful for being able to go to college, having supportive people from all sides of my family, and simply being alive. I had to pay some of my tuition bill out of pocket and I am thankful for my grandparents giving me money and having a scholarship for the fall semester to be able to pay it easily. Having a supportive family has motivated me to try to do my best in college and aim for A’s and B’s. I thank god for letting nothing bad happen to me.

In my family Thanksgiving is a big deal. From getting together with our friends and family to the eating of the good food. One of our family traditions that we do is to go around the room saying one thing that we are thankful for and to give thanks to someone who has blessed you or has done something for you throughout the year other than God right before we eat. Something else that we do during Thanksgiving that’s not really a tradition but something we tend to do is go black Friday shopping. After eating my older relatives tend to get together and talk about things they want or are going to get and where to go to get the best deal. But, for me I am just ready to get home so I can eat. Yes I know thanksgiving is not all about the food but being in college I have been struggling to get decent meals, therefore I am just ready to get my hands on anything I can get to. The ham, turkey, potato salad, corn, macaroni and cheese, green beans, mashed potatoes, yams, collard greens, and more. I am going to eat so good and I just can not wait. I am very thankful for a lot of things but if I had to pick the main things I am thankful for I would say that I am thankful for my family and friends for loving and supporting me in all that I do, I am thankful for the blessings that I shall continue to receive, and that I am thankful for the life that god has blessed me to live because no matter how much I complain about my life there is somebody somewhere that is doing way worst than I could imagine.

I get excited every year around Thanksgiving because it's just one of my favorite holidays. Between the eating and the weather and taking family pictures, and BLACK FRIDAY afterwards, its just a good time. I love to put on a cute outfit every year.Every Thanksgiving its tradition for my mom to cook all the food and the whole family comes over and eats, the thing I like about my family is that we always start on time. We don't have any HUGE traditions but usually its the same people each year, my granddad says the prayer each year, and me and my sister break the wishbone each year. My favorite foods are stuffing, broccoli casserole, macaroni and cheese and ham. I am SO ready for Thanksgiving because I love to eat. Even though I know I am going to hear the most annoying questions about college this year I am ready to see my family. I also travel around and collect plates from other friends and families houses. I am thankful for my family, they are the most supportive people I have in my life. I am also thankful for my boyfriend and how much he has supported and encouraged me, I'm also thankful for his family, because they treat me like their own. I thank God everyday for the people I have in my life.

During Thanksgiving I’ve to be with my family. I have always loved being around them, especially if I haven’t seen them for a good amount of time. Me and my family usually have our thanksgiving at my great granddads house. His house isn’t really the biggest but we usually make it work. The teenagers are usually in the back watching football. The adults are usually in the living room talking and laughing. And for the kids they are usually somewhere playing. The ay the food works is, all the adults are in a group chat in Group Me. They are usually assigned certain food or deserts to bring. My mom is usually in charge of the Yams. This has been going on ever since I can remember. The first thing that I am thankful for is God cause without him none of this would be possible. There would be no thanksgiving, no family, no food, nothing. The second thing I am really thankful for is my family because they have have always been there for me through good times and bad. And the third thing that I am thankful for are my friends. My friends are really important to me and I hope that we all keep in touch through our lives. It can be really hard not seeing my family for long periods of time. I might catch myself thinking about times we’ve had together and not really paying attention in class. But its ok because I know when this time of years comes around I will be able to see them. And if I don’t see them on thanksgiving, then Christmas is right around the corner

Unlike Christmas, my family and I don’t have a set destination to eat. We visit many houses, such as my aunt, grandma Mary, or sometimes we travel to Maryland. My favorite foods to eat is Mac and cheese, honey ham, yams, sweet potato casserole with brown sugar and pecans, sweet potato pie, devil eggs, and bread rolls. I’m looking forward to my aunt’s sweet potato casserole the most because I love sweet tasting things and it’s a great dessert. The number one thing I am thankful for is all of my family because they support me in anything I do and encourage me to keep being great. My older family members share words of wisdom, while my younger family members keep it real with me about real world things. They listen to me and are very understanding because they were all my age once, so it makes it very easy to talk to them. I feel no judgement when it comes to my family and for that, I will forever be thankful. I’m also thankful for my parents for being able to put me in an out-of-state college and supporting my decision to go away from home. I’m thankful for this college experience because my parents wasn’t able to get this opportunity, considering the fact they had me at my age. The last thing I am thankful for is God keeping me in good shape and keeping my health in good condition. Without my health being in good condition, I wouldn’t be able to do the things I love to do. I am alive, breathing, I have no illnesses, I am fed everyday, and I’m sleeping in a warm bed every night.

First off, I am so excited about Thanksgiving, it is one of my favorite holidays, besides Christmas, Easter, and even if it is not a holiday my Birthday. I am thankful for a lot of different things, but the top three things that I am thankful for are. God, because he died for our sins and he puts breath in my body and gives me life so that I may wake up everyday that he allows me. My Family, (Mother & Father) because they brought me into this world, and they love me unconditionally even if I have flaws, they tell me what is wrong and right, they keep me on the straight and narrow path, ( Brother) because he is always their for me even though we fuss and fight, and if I ever need him he is always there, and I could go on about the list of family members and why I am thankful for them. The last thing that I am thankful for is my good health, because not many people get a chance to say they have good health.
But something that I am excited about doing for thanksgiving is going to see my family and socialize and eat and have fun. Some thanksgiving traditions that I have is that almost every thanksgiving we pick a house to host thanksgiving at whether it be in Tennessee, Virginia, South Carolina, or we just host it in North Carolina at one of the surrounding houses. I cannot wait to see my family, so that we can clown around and crack jokes on each other and play games and really just enjoy each other's company.

Our thanksgiving tradition as changed a little over the years. I remember when I was a child all the kids had to sit at the “kiddie table” and the grown folk sat at the “big people table.” The children would get their plates first and then the adults. My little sister was very clumsy so for a few years she sat at the big table so Dad could watch her. When my Papa passed away my grandma stopped cooking and would order the meal from K&W, if she did any cooking it would be one dish from scratch, which would be a meat, and the other precooked, like pie. That’s on my dad’s side of the family, however on my mom’s side my nanny cooks the main course while my granddaddy cooked the desserts. After Granddaddy passed, my aunt took over and she makes the best chocolate icing. I know this year will be different because everyone has spread out even more now, but I look forward to see everyone. There is always a full spread with meats and vegetables, which is great in all, but I wait for the dessert, because Thanksgiving and Christmas are the only time a year my family cook their best sweets. As I munched earlier, I go for my aunt’s white or yellow cake with chocolate icing, sometimes I’ll get a roll or biscuit, and occasionally I’ll get a slither of turkey. I have so much to be thankful for in my life, every day is a blessing, and to get this for in life with the minor struggles I’ve had, I know God is working around me. I just hope that I can bless people as the individuals put in my path have blessed me.

Everyone enjoys Thanksgiving not only for the food but because you get to see family that you probably haven’t seen in a while. You get with your family and reflect on memories with laughter or sometimes shed tears for the lost loved ones. Some traditions that my family and I partake in is before dinner we all say what we are thankful for, we also have a turkey contest to see who prepared the best turkey and we have the same competition for sweet potato pies (I am not a fan of sweet potato pie). Our final family tradition is we put up our Christmas tree. My thanksgiving is not like a “normal” thanksgiving when you have all your family come and you all eat and fellowship at one house, my family and I are originally from Oklahoma so we have no family here to fellowship with. Some of the foods I am excited about eating is the infamous baked macaroni and cheese, dressing with cranberry sauce, and sweet potatoes. The first thing I am thankful for is my family not having to pay for me to go to school is being paid for from various scholarships and financial aid. The second thing I am thankful for is my family and roommates being so supportive of me and everything I choose to do in life. The third thing I am thankful for is being able to grow up in a loving church home that has taught me so much about life and handling different situations.

I can't wait until Thanksgiving. Since we recently moved closer to my dad's side of the family, I will get to see the side of the family I don't usually see. I am looking forward to my uncle's delicious baked mac and cheese, and stuffing, and my grandmother's peach cobbler. We don't necessarily have traditions, but my dad along with a few from his side of the family are pastors and preachers so each one says a brief prayer/blessing before we have dinner. One thing I am thankful for is my parents. Incidents have happened over the year that has taught me to not take them for granted. I don't think I'd be here without the motivation from my mom and dad. Another thing I am thankful for is God. I am thankful to him because he has kept my family safe from harm and I get to see them come together one more time. The third thing I am thankful for is me being able to attend school. For some reason, I received very little from financial aid, and was unfortunate to not have enough scholarship money. My parent's were pulling out almost $2,000 a month for my tuition and fees. I am grateful that I have the opportunity to be here under that financial condition because I know many were not allowed to due to similar situations.

First thing first, being in college has made me more anxious for Thanksgiving than I have ever been before. Thanksgiving is just a wonderful time for food, laughter, and football. I think a tradition in my family is if live in the house, you must help cook at least 1 dish, and if you are a family member or friend coming to our house for Thanksgiving you must bring any item that can be beneficial; a dish, paper plates, cups, and shoot even a bottle of wine for the adults lol. Every year, I look forward to the mac and cheese, dressing, and the dessert. My mom be throwing down when it comes to those 3 good eats. Her sweet potato pie and peach cobbler are usually the two things she'll make. For Thanksgiving, I always like to reflect on how grateful I am. I usually go to a church in Fayetteville and make plates for the homeless but due to Thanksgiving be held in Greensboro this year... there's a change of plans. But I am truly grateful to have a HARD WORKING Father, a supportive and a caring Mother, countless mentors, and the many accomplishments in my past that continues to open doors for me now and soon in the future

Being that I was raised in a split home, I've only spent Thanksgiving with my Dad's side of the family once in my life and the rest I've spent with my mom. Furthermore, my moms ex husband who was actually my God dad when I was little is always around as well as all my step-brothers and sisters who I grew up with but sometimes he chooses to spend Thanksgiving with his family rather than us. Usually because my immediate family is so small, me my mom and my sister sometimes travel to Atlanta, Georgia to spend Thanksgiving with the family on my moms side, but if she doesn't feel like making that trip, we spend Thanksgiving in our home where she cooks lots of food and invite friends and family that live in Florida. Every year she cooks, she makes the basics that's always extraordinarily delicious. She makes, baked macaroni and cheese, yams with extra sugar and marshmallows on top, ham with a cocoa cola glaze, collard greens, oxtails and rice, cornbread, stuffing that I don't really like, fried turkey, banana pudding, and sweet potato pie. Along with all my moms great cooking, I tend to make my famous homemade red velvet cake that they always request on special occasions because you cant have all that good southern food without red velvet cake which so happens to be my favorite by the way. After we eat, if there is something good in theaters, we go to the movies but if not we watch one together in the living room and fall asleep until about 8PM and wake back up just to eat again. Three things at the top of my personal list I am extremely thankful for is being Black, being talented, and being loved. Without those three great attributes I honestly don't think my life would have turned out as good as it did and have such a bright future ahead of it.

In my home, we don’t necessarily celebrate Thanksgiving like the traditional family. My family isn’t really that big at all so on Thanksgiving, my grandparents come over to our house and we eat. It not really a big meal due to it only being four of us but we all just eat whenever and wherever. Mostly every year I eat in my room and watch tv. The only time I feel I experience a “normal” Thanksgiving is when I go visit my dad’s side of the family in Newark, New Jersey because everyone comes together at my grandmother’s house and brings one dish, I haven’t been there on Thanksgiving since about 6th grade. A few things I am thankful for is of course is that I have my family and they are all in good health. Being that my mother and I are both the only child, I don’t have a lot of relatives in North Carolina. So, a lot of the people I consider my family are not all related to me by blood, but blood wouldn’t have made us any closer. Specifically, I’m thankful for my mother for giving up things she needed and sacrificing just so she could provide for me growing up. I am also thankful to God for is the fact that I am alive and in good health. The fact that I can wake up every morning without being in pain or need assistance. In my future I plan to celebrate a traditional Thanksgiving with wife and kids and our families under one household enjoying great food.

Some traditions that take place in my family is that everyone cooks at their own home that we always gather at my grand mothers house the day before thanks giving to catch up with everyone that has come in from out of state places and have a mini dinner before actual thanksgiving. Also on the day of thanksgiving we all gather either at my grand mothers house or my aunts house where we sit back and eat and enjoy everyone company and we all say one thing that we are thankful for doing. Another thing that we do as a family is we get one big hat and everyone has to write there name down, when everyone draws their name out the hat we all say the name and whatever name you pick you have to get that person a Christmas gift. Later that evening after dinner and we all get rest then we head out has a whole and do Black Friday shopping while the little children stay back at my grandmothers with older cousins or whoever doesn’t want to go shopping that early. Some of the foods that I look forward to eating is stuffing, chicken salad, collard green, macaroni & cheese , ham, turkey , sweet potato pie, and different kinds of homemade cakes. There are three main things that I am thankful for is the family that I have , our health, mother, friends and also the people around me that helps makes me a better person and the education that I have received and is receiving.

For thanksgiving a large number of my family shows up to my house and we always eat lots of food for thanksgiving because so many people bring their own food that they made for all of us to share. My favorite food at thanksgiving to eat is pumpkin pie because i enjoy the flavor of it so much. Some things we do at thanksgiving is go outside and play football or everyone talks to each other and ask how they have been. Some things that i am thankful for is my mother because without her i wouldn’t be the person i am today because she taught me all the morals i have and how to respect others. I am also thankful for my father because he is a very smart man who helps me with my education and without him our family wouldn’t live the life that we live now and we would not have someone to guide us through our hard times. I am also thankful for my sisters because they are both so funny and they bring me happiness that i couldn’t get anywhere else. I am also glad that i get to see a bunch of family members that i haven’t seen in a long time and i will be really glad to talk to them and catch up on how they are doing in life.

By being in college for that past few months, I have never been so ready for Thanksgiving in all my life. I have really been looking forward to this for that past few weeks now. Some traditions we have in my family is that we all come together at my aunt’s house to celebrate Thanksgiving since it’s so many of us and I have family coming from all over the place. Also, a couple of weeks before Thanksgiving, each member of the family chooses what they want to prepare to bring for the family dinner. This year I was in charge for some of the desserts so I will be up doing a lot before Thanksgiving. After we eat we usually play games and just sit and catch up with everyone. To end the day, some of us will go Black Friday shopping if we feel up to it because it can be a drain sometimes but it’s fun to do. Some of the foods that I look forward to eating are all the varieties of cakes and pies and of course some turkey. Three things that are at the top of my personal list that I am thankful for is my health, the love and support that my family has for one another, and most importantly my education because not to many people have this opportunity that I have today. Of course I have many more things to be grateful for and I hope that everyone has a great Thanksgiving!!!

The main traditions my family has for Thanksgiving is that my mom’s side usually spends the day at my grandmother’s house and everyone prepares a dish that they would like to make. All of her children and other relatives gather at her house to celebrate. I usually spend Thanksgiving with my dad’s side of the family, it’s been like that for a while now. My dad’s side gathers at my aunt’s house and does the same thing as my mom’s side, where everyone chooses the dish they would like to make. Most of the family isn’t home during Thanksgiving though, so it becomes a bigger celebration when Christmas comes around. The foods I looked forward to eating the most would be the lasagna, cookie pudding, it’s just banana pudding just without the bananas, still good though. I wanted some baked spaghetti but it was at my grandmother’s house so I will have to snag that before I make it back to WSSU. Overall, I am thankful for my family, especially my parents because they push me to go further in life, and I talk my mom’s head off from time to time so I’m glad she sticks around for that, even though she works late. I’m also thankful for my girls, who I claim as family, although we don’t talk every day we still push each other to do the best we can. Most of all, I just want to thank God for allowing me to get up every day, and give me the strength to make it through the week because times get tough and I want to give up but I still make it through the day with him.
